Giftings vs Anointings

We need to understand the difference between giftings (or natural talents) and anointings. Giftings minister to the soul – the mind, will and emotions. The song sounds good. The preaching made us feel happy. Anointings minister to the spirit. Anointing breaks yokes, sets captives free, brings healing and deliverance. Giftings change a person for a moment. Anointings change a person for a lifetime. Giftings cannot be taken away. Anointings must be honored and used appropriately or they will be removed from us (look at Saul – his anointing as king was removed from him and given to David). Many times we mistake giftings for anointings. Anointed people may not always look, sound or behave the way we think they should – but the fruit of their ministry speaks for itself. Smith Wigglesworth, Oral Roberts, & William Brenham were all stutterers until the anointing came upon them and their ministries are still speaking today. Jonathan Edwards read his sermons in dry monotone, but people literally dug claw marks into the pews in front of them in fear of missing God. Bezaleal was a gifted man in the arts, but when Moses prayed over him and the anointing was placed on him, he created art pieces that people today are still trying unsuccessfully to replicate. Today, if we want revival, we need to place value on anointings and push them to the forefront instead of the giftings or talents of people. It might not always look or sound or feel the best – but then are we going after the emotions of a person or after their spirit.
“God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.” John 4:24 (NKJV)
